# Importing System Items

A configuration item (CI) is anything you track in the CMDB, such as assets, software products, catalog items, companies, and users. This page creates CIs for System Items that already exist in SysAid, on demand. Running the import only adds CIs that don't exist yet in your CMDB, so you don't have to worry about duplicates.

## How it works

If you want to control which assets get imported, set up an asset filter first. It only affects assets pulled in by future import runs; it won't undo assets already imported. Then click Import to create a CI for each System Item of that type that doesn't have one yet. Once your CIs exist, whether from here or from automatic creation in Import Settings, use Update CI Relations to build the relationships between them.

### Asset filter

When you import assets to the CMDB, you can create a filter to control which assets are imported.

1. Next to the **Import all assets to the CMDB** import button, click the **3-dot icon.**
2. Use the [Expression Builder](/v1/docs/expression-builder) to create a filter for your asset import.

When you click Import, the assets are imported according to the filter you created.

## Run the import

2. Click the appropriate **Import** button to import the desired items. SysAid displays the number and type of CIs that were imported.

> Please note:
> 
> If you've chosen to automatically import or delete these CIs under **Settings** > **Setup & Monitoring** > **CMDB** > **Import Settings**, there's no need to use the import buttons here. You'll still want to use **Update CI Relations**, however.

## Update CI relations

This automatically creates relationships between the various CIs in your CMDB. For example, it connects a catalog item with its relevant assets. To learn more about the types of relationships SysAid supports, see [CI Relation Types](https://documentation.sysaid.com/docs/ci-relation-types).
